Much has been said about the growing economic
disparity between the First World and Third World.
But what about the pivotal regions of growing political influence and economic
strength, which are caught in the transitory phase from Third to First World status? Collectively known as the new “Second
World” – a term popularized by writer Parag Khanna in an influential book
bearing the same title – these emerging middle-income countries in Eastern
Europe, Central Asia, South America, the Middle East and East Asia, will play
an increasingly important role in 21st-century geopolitics dominated by the US,
Europe and China. The superpowers can no longer neglect these second-tier
